Direct Care Staff Duties

The following job duties are general in nature and should be considered guidelines or a definitive list. Employees are asked to work together as a team, and as a result, there will be times when they may be asked to assume additional responsibilities not listed here. Some job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting clients with activities of daily living.
  • Transporting clients as needed, including to local day program (s) on a timely basis
  • Carry out and chart all activities as set out in the Individual Support Plan, Behavior Management Plan and as otherwise needed for general skill acquisition
  • Assist clients with appearance and grooming, including appropriate clothing selection and general hygiene
  • Assist clients in maintaining their homes, including the provision of oversight, instructions, and encouragement with household chores according to a client’s needs and goals
  • Prepare the home for the next shift (tidying up, completing paperwork, etc.)
  • Assist in medication distribution in accordance with medication distribution guidelines
  • Complete household chores on behalf of or in cooperation with clients (e.g., client’s laundry, cleaning client’s bathroom, bedroom and other areas of the home used by the client). General household chores not directly benefiting the client shall be limited to 20% or less of employee’s hours

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • CPR/First Aid certification
  • At least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Free from communicable diseases
  • Able to see and hear sufficiently to provide client care and ensure safety and well-being of self and client
  • Able to squat, bend, kneel, twist, push/pull, lift and carry
  • Able to lift, push and pull 50 pounds without assistance
  • Able to lift, push and pull 350 pounds with assistance
  • Able to make reasoned, appropriate decisions in emergency and non-emergency situations
  • Able to read and write sufficiently to complete required documentation
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license
  • Owns or has access to a vehicle in good working order
  • Possesses current automobile insurance (for vehicles registered in the state of Indiana)
  • Must pass criminal history back ground checks
  • Have a negative Tuberculosis test, or clear chest x-ray/A-symptomatic test
